Airlie Beach: when your ship stops here
A swimming lagoon in town, a seven kilometre white beach, and boats to the islands and the reef.

Airlie Beach is a resort town in the Whitsunday Region of Queensland, Australia, with 1,312 people at the 2021 census, and one of the departure points for the Great Barrier Reef. Ships anchor offshore and bring guests in by tender. A cruise port guide says the landing is at either the Port of Airlie, beside the town center, or Shute Harbour, about 10 km (6.2 miles) east, so confirm which one on your day.

Top 3 things to do
1. Airlie Beach Lagoon and the foreshore
The beach is small and the water has box jellyfish and marine stingers, so the town built a public swimming lagoon of about 4,300 square metres (46,300 square feet). A cruise port guide says the Port of Airlie landing is a short walk from the south end of the town center, with the main street reachable in roughly 5 to 10 minutes.
Tip: The same guide suggests a short call is best spent in town: the main street, the foreshore and the lagoon.

2. Whitehaven Beach
A beach on Whitsunday Island, 7 kilometres long, known for bright white sand that is 98 percent pure silica and for turquoise water. Wikipedia says it can be reached from Airlie Beach by boat, seaplane or helicopter.
Tip: A cruise port guide warns that boat trips can use most or all of your time ashore, so check the trip against your all aboard time.

3. The Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef
The Whitsundays are 74 continental islands off the central coast of Queensland, 900 kilometres (560 miles) north of Brisbane. A cruise port guide says most tour boats to the reef and the islands leave from Abell Point Marina.
Tip: Our sources give no trip lengths. Ask the tour company how long the boat takes and when it is back.

What to skip
Swimming in the sea off the beach
A cruise port guide says the waters here are full of box jellyfish and marine stingers, which is why the town built the lagoon with a swimming zone.

Before you go ashore
You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
