Does Ship Age Change the Price of a Royal Caribbean Cruise? A Night, Oldest to Newest
The newest ships cost the most a night, and the oldest the least. But most of that gap is where the old ships go and how long they stay, not their age.
A night on a Royal Caribbean ship that entered service in 2024 or later costs a middle $229. On a ship older than 2005 it is $115, which is less than half. Set against the usual fare for the same home port and the same number of nights, the newest ships are 18% above, and the oldest are 2% below. So the gap is real, but it is smaller than the raw numbers say.
Every number comes from our own price data, as captured on 20 October 2026. For 1,854 cruises we took the lowest interior fare per person, taxes and port fees included, and divided it by the number of nights. We grouped the cruises by the year the ship entered service. The box at the bottom says exactly how. This is what Royal Caribbean is asking today, not what anyone paid.
A night, by the age of the ship
The night goes up with every step from old to new, from $115 to $130, $157, $180 and $229. The newest group is the dearest by a wide margin, and it holds only 4 ships, so a few ships carry the whole row.
A night on a Royal Caribbean cruise, by the age of the ship
Lowest interior fare per person, taxes and port fees included, divided by the number of nights, for cruises leaving 1 November 2026 to 31 October 2027, as priced on 20 October 2026. Each bar runs from the 10th to the 90th percentile of that group. The note beside it gives the middle, the number of cruises and the number of ships.
| Ship entered service | Ships | Cruises priced | Middle per night | Against usual for the same port and length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In service before 2005 | 13 | 752 | $115 | 2% below |
| 2005 to 2012 | 5 | 316 | $130 | 9% below |
| 2013 to 2019 | 6 | 357 | $157 | 3% below |
| 2020 to 2023 | 2 | 144 | $180 | level with |
| 2024 or later | 4 | 285 | $229 | 18% above |
Lowest interior fare per person, taxes and port fees included, priced on 20 October 2026. "Usual" is the middle night for the same home port and the same number of nights across all ships. 1,329 of 1,854 cruises have a usual to compare with; the rest sail from ports or lengths with too few cruises or only one ship.
How much of the gap is the ship, and how much is where it goes
The first column says the newest ships cost 2.0 times as much a night as the oldest. The last column compares like with like, the same home port and the same length, and the gap shrinks to about 20%. The older ships take many of the shorter, cheaper trips out of Mexican, Gulf and Florida ports and the long, cheap crossings. A cruise like that has a low night whatever the age of the ship.
The cleanest test is the most common cruise there is: a 7-night round trip. For those alone the middle night is $107 for ships in service before 2005, $127 for ships from 2005 to 2012, $142 for ships from 2013 to 2019, $182 for ships from 2020 to 2023, $244 for ships from 2024 or later. The climb is still there, from 298 cruises on the oldest ships to 142 on the newest.
Ship by ship
Here are the 30 ships with at least 20 priced cruises in the window, oldest first. The year is the year the ship entered service, from our ship pages. The order is not clean, and that is the point: Grandeur of the Seas (1996) is at $142 a night, above ships many years newer, because of the routes it sails.

What to do with this
Do not buy a ship by its age, buy the cruise. A newer ship costs more a night, but you are also paying for the port, the length and the week. If the fare is what matters, compare the all-in fare of the cruises you could actually take. If the ship matters, the table shows what it costs against the others, in the fares we saw on 20 October. Our ship pages list every ship with its back-to-backs.
On a leg-to-leg trip, each leg is its own cruise with its own night, and the two legs can be on different ships. How the legs join up is in the back-to-back guide, and which ships have the most back-to-backs counts them for all 31 ships.
What this does not tell you
- It is the lowest interior cabin. A balcony or suite can follow a different order, and a new ship has more of the dear cabin types.
- It is fare only. Flights, hotels and the night before the cruise are not in it.
- Year in service is not the date of the last refit. A ship from 2010 that was refitted recently is still counted as 2010.
- The 2020 to 2023 group is 2 ships, and the 2024 or later group is 4. A few ships and a few routes carry those rows.
- Season is only partly separated out. A ship that spends the summer in Alaska or Europe has a higher night than the same ship in the winter in the Caribbean.
- This is one day of fares, 20 October 2026. Fares move daily, and nothing here is a quote.
Sailings with no fare
38 cruises in the window had no fare when we looked. They are shown as unpriced on the site, left out of every figure here and never estimated. We also left out 15 priced cruises on Hero of the Seas, which has not entered service yet, 179 cruise-and-land-tour packages, because a tour fare covers days on land, and 13 cruises of 2 nights.
