Lesson 1 of 5
What a back-to-back cruise is
Two or more cruises in a row on the same ship, and you never really leave.

The idea in one minute
A back-to-back cruise is two or more cruises booked one after another, so that the day one cruise ends, the next one begins. In the Royal Caribbean world each cruise is called a leg when it is part of a longer trip.
Here is the part that surprises people. Royal Caribbean does not sell a 14-night back-to-back as one thing. You book two separate 7-night cruises that happen to leave from the same port, and the line joins them for you on the day in between. That is why a back-to-back is booked leg by leg.
What makes two legs connect
- The same home port. The first leg ends where the second begins.
- The same day. The second leg leaves on the day the first one arrives.
- The same ship, if you want to stay aboard and keep your cabin.
Some trips end in a different port than they began in, and those are real too. Each trip page on this site says where the trip ends.
Why people do it
- More days at sea for the price of the extra nights. A longer trip is often cheaper per night. The next lesson shows the numbers.
- No second round of packing. Same cabin, same crew, a fresh map of ports if the ship alternates its routes.
- Casino offers. Each leg is its own booking, so each leg can carry its own Club Royale offer. Course 2 covers that.
How far it goes
When we searched every home port on 19 September 2026, the longest run on the board was 42 legs on one ship, 294 nights, leaving Port Canaveral with seven nights a leg. Most people book two or three. The point is that the idea stretches as far as the ship keeps coming back to the same port. Our guide to the longest back-to-back you can book has the details.
For the full story, read the Complete Guide or watch the video above. Next lesson: what it costs.
In short: A back-to-back is separate bookings that connect: the same ship, and the next leg leaves the day the last one ends.
