Lesson 2 of 5

What a back-to-back costs

Three things move the price: which ship, which week, and how long.

Two people, 14 nights, one port

Take two people who book 14 nights out of Miami in the same stretch of autumn. One pays less than half of what the other pays. Neither found a secret deal. They pulled different levers, and there are three.

Lever one: the ship

This is the big one. Four ships ran those 14 nights from Miami in the same weeks, and the newest cost more than double the oldest. You are not buying more vacation. You are buying a newer ship. On 14 September 2026 the lowest inside-cabin fare per guest, taxes and port fees included, ran from $950.65 on Freedom of the Seas to $2,064.84 on Icon of the Seas.

Lever two: the week

Keep the ship and the cabin the same and change only the date. Across six weeks of one autumn, the dearest week cost about a third more than the cheapest. Same ports, same bed. If your dates can move a week either way, check both.

Lever three: the length

A longer trip costs more in total, but each night usually costs less. On the same pull, a 33-night run from Seattle came to $3,847.04 per guest, about $117 a night, which is less per night than two weeks in the Caribbean on the newest ship. Long trips include cheap sea days, and sea days cost the line little to sell.

The catch

Staying on the same ship does not automatically mean the same cabin. Two bookings can put you in two rooms, and then you pack a bag on the morning in between. Ask for the same cabin on both legs when you book.

What to do with this

  1. Pick the ship first. It moves the price more than anything else.
  2. Look at the weeks on either side of the one you wanted.
  3. Compare the price per night, not only the total.

Fares move every day, and these figures are from one date, so use them to learn the pattern, then check the live fare. Our article on what a back-to-back costs has the full table. Next lesson: where to start.

In short: Same nights, same port: the ship and the week decide the price far more than the number of nights.
