Tarragona: when your ship stops here

A Roman city by the sea: an amphitheater for gladiators, a circus for chariot races, and a cathedral at the top of the town.

Facts checked Nov 6, 2026, each with its source. No prices on this page.

Tarragona is a city in Catalonia, Spain, with 141,542 people in 2021. The Romans built it as Tarraco on a hill by the sea, and its Roman ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Royal Caribbean lists this stop as Barcelona (Tarragona), but the ship is in Tarragona. Our sources do not say how far the cruise pier is from the city center or how long the ride to Barcelona takes, so ask on board.

Top 3 things to do

  1. 1. The Roman amphitheater

Built in the 2nd century for fights between gladiators and with wild animals. A Visigoth basilica was built over it in the 6th century and a Romanesque church in the 12th. Tarragona Turisme says Bishop Fructuosus and his deacons Augurius and Eulogius were martyred here, the oldest martyrs of Roman Spain.

  2. 2. The Roman circus and the Praetorium tower

The circus was a great building for horse-drawn chariot races, built in the late 1st century AD under the emperor Domitian. One of the two towers that joined it to the square below the Temple of Augustus is the Praetorium, which became a royal castle from the 12th century.

Tip: The city's own heritage page says you can walk through the arched vaults that held up the seats. Our sources give no opening hours.

  3. 3. The cathedral

Begun in the 12th century at the highest point of the city, on the site of the temple to the emperor Augustus, which Tarragona Turisme calls the first built in his honor in the western Roman Empire. Wikipedia says it mixes Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Tip: It is at the top of the old town, so allow for the climb. Our sources give no visiting hours.

What to skip

  • Les Ferreres Aqueduct on a short call

A Roman aqueduct over a valley about 4 km (2.5 miles) north of the city, with two tiers of arches, the highest 26 m (85 ft) tall. Our sources give no way to get there and no time for it, so leave it for a longer visit.

Before you go ashore

You do not have to book a tour: you are free to go ashore on your own. Royal Caribbean sets the all aboard time about 30 minutes before the ship sails, posts it near the gangway, and says the ship does not wait for guests touring on their own.
